My husband and I love New York style bagels. If you know, you know! The Onion is spot on with their fresh from scratch bagels at the cafe/restaurant. We fell in love with their great food, delicious coffee, and outstanding hospitality! Armando, the manager gave us a tour of the entire facility where deep behind the ... cafe you see an amazingly clean area where the female bakers are hard at work preparing the bagels from scratch. I’m stunned that I’ve not written a review for Onion Roll. I appreciate this Oak Park gem! I’ve visited the restaurant for breakfast, no frills, but good…with an extensive menu & specials. Came here with my boyfriend to try out their breakfast. I got the breakfast special with an everything bagel and he got the fresh smoked lox bagel sandwich on a garlic bagel. Both were delicious!! Been here a few times and the food never disappoints! Great coffee and always fresh made food! The bagels are some of the best! We always order the lox when we can. I had a serious hankering for a proper pastrami sandwich today, so we headed over to The Onion Roll. This little place offers a lot of dining options as you can order to go from the deli counter, or dine in at the cafe style dining room (which also has a coffee bar). The sandwich came piled high with hot pastrami on ... soft rye bread with sides of coleslaw, pickle spear, and fries. The meat came juicy and with all the right flavor, but I couldn't help adding a little mustard. The only mark against the place, really, is the pricing. Came here for a lox bagle due to recommendations from a buddy of mines and man I'm glad I did because the lox bagle was filling and top tier for sure. Pretty classic lox bagle with sweet onion , cream cheese , capers , tomato and a ton of salmon lox. While being a bit more pricier than other spots like the daily ... bagle , I would much rather come here for a filling meal. I can see why this place has been in business for over 65 years , the bagle was light, crispy and had a nice chew. The only con was the coffee and if you like mcdonalds coffee you'll like it but if you enjoy a nice cup from spots like metropolis, intelligentsia and kribi coffee you won't care for it.
